We need to wait for the snippets BOM to be updated to the version that contains the commit stats changes (>= 4.0.0) before we can merge this PR. |

We generally tend to use environment variables over system properties for configuration in Java samples (See https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/java-docs-samples/blob/master/SAMPLE_FORMAT.md#project-configuration). This makes it easier to set these properties for CI tests.
Is there a specific reason we're using properties here?

That is what we are doing for all other sample integration tests:
We could change how we are doing this and move to environment variables, but I would prefer to do that in separate tech debt fixing PR. Would that be ok?

Doing it in a separate PR should be fine. I'll approve this PR, but please open an issue to track the work for updating this and other samples.

Throws an error if the instance is not set. Fixes the format database id name function.
