BREAKING NEWS & VIEWS
Light Reading Buys Data Analysis CompanyWednesday, August 27, 2008 TechWeb’s Light Reading Communications Network announced today (August 27) its acquisition of global telecom data gathering and analysis company Pyramid Research—known for its strong presence in developing markets. TechWeb’s parent company, United Business Media, announced the buy set it back $8M. Pyramid will be merged with Light Reading market research arm Heavy Reading. Active in 70 markets, Pyramid’s bottom-up approach to data gathering was a draw for Light Reading, according to group director and SVP Joseph Braue. Braue told min, “Heavy Reading has a top-down analytical strength," adding that Heavy Reading reports analysis about business issues in the telecom industry, while Pyramid collects data about size and growth trajectory in the telecom space. “(There will be) all sorts of opportunities to have Heavy Reading’s customers have appropriate access to Pyramid’s resources and vice versa,” Braue says. According to the Telecommunications Industry Association, the $3T telecom industry will grow to $3.9T by 2009, Braue says. After looking at the company for several months, Light Reading decided that Pyramid’s strength in new markets like India, China, Southeast Asia and the Middle East—where 70% of telecom market growth is occurring, according to Braue—was attractive. Conversely, Light Reading offers Pyramid a chance to expand its presence using the integrated events and media research company’s resources, Braue says. For example, Light Reading produces 120 Webinars per year and can apply that capability to Pyramid’s data. “It’s an incredibly important strategic move for Light Reading,” says Braue.
