The ultimate purpose of the technical assistance is to contribute directly to the reduction of poverty and vulnerability by accelerating private sector development and investments solutions relevant for the poor.
Timor-Leste has taken major steps toward joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, but challenges remain. Strengthening governance, promoting investments, expanding trade, and enhancing human capital are still needed.
ADB has been instrumental in addressing infrastructure bottlenecks and institutional constraints in Timor-Leste, contributing to paving the way for sustainable development. ADB’s expanded project portfolio now bolsters the Government of Timor-Leste’s initiatives to create a favorable environment for private sector growth and economic diversification.
To date, ADB has committed 81 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance totaling $766 million to Timor-Leste.

The Timor-Leste Resident Mission (TLRM) was opened in 2000 and provides the primary operational link for activities between ADB and the government, the private sector, civil society stakeholders, and development partners. The resident mission engages in policy dialogue, country partnership strategy development and programming, and portfolio management, while also acting as a knowledge base on development issues in Timor-Leste.
