Nauru, an island country of 21 square kilometers, is resource-constrained, far from major markets, import-dependent, and challenged with limited sources for economic growth and revenue diversification. The Government of Nauru relies on revenue from Australia’s regional processing center for asylum seekers, fluctuating fishing license fees, and overseas development assistance. To expand sources of revenue, the government is mining secondary phosphate, expanding air services, and building capacity for its workers to pursue employment in the region.
To date, ADB has committed 27 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance totaling $157 million to Nauru.
