ADB’s partnership with Turkmenistan supports the country’s efforts to become a more sustainable, climate-resilient, and competitive economy.
ADB President Masato Kanda met with Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov at the Presidential Palace to strengthen ADB’s long-standing partnership with Turkmenistan and discuss ways to deepen cooperation in support of the country’s sustainable and inclusive growth.
ADB has approved a $75 million equivalent loan and a $2 million grant from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific to increase the quantity and improve the quality of nurses and midwives in Turkmenistan.
Proposed to modernize the 1,147 km strategic railway line between Turkmenabat, Mary, Ashgabat, and Turkmenbashi—located at the crossroads of major eastwest and northsouth international trade routes and accounts for over 50% of freight movements in Turkmenistan.
Since 2018, ADB has supported Turkmenistan with a $500M project financing of 1,400 km of transmission lines, 11 substations, and TA. With Turkmenenergo’s contributions, exports rose, and capacity to design, build, and manage energy infrastructure improved.
ADB has been a long-standing partner of the Government of Turkmenistan, providing assistance crucial to the country’s development needs. Over the last 25 years, ADB has helped the government improve transport infrastructure connectivity, strengthen the national grid, diversify the economy, develop human capital and the private sector, strengthen policymaking capacity, and support climate action.
To date, ADB has committed 15 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance totaling $636 million to Turkmenistan.
