    ADB Approves First Health Sector Project in Turkmenistan

    ADB has approved a $75 million equivalent loan and a $2 million grant from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific to increase the quantity and improve the quality of nurses and midwives in Turkmenistan.

    TransTurkmenistan Railway Modernization Project

    Proposed to modernize the 1,147 km strategic railway line between Turkmenabat, Mary, Ashgabat, and Turkmenbashi—located at the crossroads of major eastwest and northsouth international trade routes and accounts for over 50% of freight movements in Turkmenistan.

    Strengthening Turkmenistan’s National Power Grid and Energy Efficiency

    Since 2018, ADB has supported Turkmenistan with a $500M project financing of 1,400 km of transmission lines, 11 substations, and TA. With Turkmenenergo’s contributions, exports rose, and capacity to design, build, and manage energy infrastructure improved.

ADB's Work in Turkmenistan

ADB has been a long-standing partner of the Government of Turkmenistan, providing assistance crucial to the country’s development needs. Over the last 25 years, ADB has helped the government improve transport infrastructure connectivity, strengthen the national grid, diversify the economy, develop human capital and the private sector, strengthen policymaking capacity, and support climate action.

To date, ADB has committed 15 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance totaling $636 million to Turkmenistan.

Forecasts are based on ADB's flagship publication, the Asian Development Outlook. Updated four times a year, it analyzes economic and development issues in developing countries in Asia and the Pacific.

Development indicators for Turkmenistan, including a selection of economic, environmental, and social indicators used globally to track progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.

Results achieved are aggregate amounts of outputs and outcomes from operations reported in project completion reports and extended annual review reports circulated for the year.

Cofinancing operations enable ADB’s financing partners, governments or their agencies, multilateral financing institutions, and commercial organizations to participate in financing ADB projects.
