- First and only program aligned with the State Bar of California’s new Privacy Law Specialization
- Led by Jeewon Kim Serrato, Chair of the State Bar of California’s Privacy Law Specialization consulting group and Senior Fellow at the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, and Global Head of Consumer Protection at Pillsbury
Berkeley, CA, January 28, 2026 — Berkeley Law today announced the launch of the Chief Privacy Officer Program, a premium executive education program designed to help senior privacy and legal leaders navigate the rapidly evolving intersection of privacy law, AI governance, and technology regulation. The program is implemented by Berkeley Law Executive Education in partnership with the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology (BCLT).
The Chief Privacy Officer Program is the first and only executive program aligned with the State Bar of California’s new Privacy Law Specialization, reflecting the accelerating demand for advanced privacy leadership expertise as organizations respond to new regulation, rising stakeholder expectations, and the realities of AI-enabled business.
Built for experienced professionals working across industries and regions, the Chief Privacy Officer Program supports privacy leaders in California and around the world as they confront evolving legal requirements, new AI governance expectations, and high-stakes decisions about data and trust.
Rather than simply outlining legal requirements, the Chief Privacy Officer Program focuses on applying legal principles to real-world business challenges, reflecting the way privacy and AI issues arise in practice.
Jeewon Kim Serrato, Esq., CIPP, will serve as the program’s lead instructor. Serrato is Global Head of Consumer Protection and a partner in the San Francisco office at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, where she is also a member of the firm’s Global AI Task Force.
Serrato also chairs the State Bar of California’s consulting group supporting the establishment of the Privacy Law Specialization certification program and serves as a Senior Fellow with BCLT.
“This program is built for senior executives leading data transformation, information security, and AI, and for California lawyers, it will provide a direct pathway towards becoming a certified specialist in privacy law.” said Jeewon Kim Serrato, Program Instructor and Senior Fellow, Berkeley Center for Law & Technology. “You’ll gain the strategic and cross-functional skills modern privacy leaders need, from AI governance to enterprise data strategy.”
Serrato brings experience spanning law firms, government, and in-house privacy leadership, including prior service as Chief Privacy Officer at Fannie Mae and in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee.
Designed for experienced professionals who lead privacy strategy, governance, and risk management across organizations, the Chief Privacy Officer Program brings together flexible learning, live faculty engagement, and an in-person Berkeley capstone experience.
“Berkeley Law is committed to preparing leaders to meet the legal and governance challenges shaping technology and society,” said Eric A Askins, Assistant Dean for Innovation, Berkeley Law. “The Chief Privacy Officer Program reflects that commitment, offering rigorous, practice-informed training for the people responsible for privacy and AI governance at the highest levels of decision-making, in California and beyond.”
Program format and experience
The Chief Privacy Officer Program includes:
- Core Curriculum (asynchronous): Seven self-paced online modules designed for working professionals
- Strategic Dialogue (live online): Interactive sessions with Berkeley Law faculty and guest speakers focused on emerging privacy and AI governance challenges
- Berkeley Capstone (in person): A culminating with a one-day on-campus seminar in June 2026, designed for advanced discussion, applied learning, and peer network-building
- Comprehensive Specialization (Bonus Access): Participants receive exclusive access to BCLT’s B-CLE platform, including the full library of content needed to complete the remaining 60-hour education requirement for the State Bar of California’s Privacy Law Specialization
“Privacy leaders today need a functional understanding of technology, along with mastery of legal requirements and the changing soft law norms governing platforms,” said Professor Chris Hoofnagle. “The Chief Privacy Officer program continues Berkeley’s signature recipe of tech, law, and society.”
