The term XR… Extended Reality? What does that even mean? #noVRVR The reality industry builds incredible things because of reality. But to truly understand it, the definitions need to be far more consistent. The “Metaverse” moment exposed that inconsistency. Everything resolves down to three things: 🕐Time. 🌌Space. ⚛️Matter. This post you’re reading exists in the future of a past moment, in 2d LinkedIn space, as virtual matter. That atomic matter represents a sphere that existed in 3D Las Vegas space, as a physical screen. That was being viewed in a 3D Android XR environment, made entirely of bits. By using clear definitions that consciousness can comprehend we can make smarter decisions about pressing issues. The virtual bit space is very dirty on concious behavior. Some technological shifts stand out in your memory clearly. Moments that you remember clearly as it’s obvious that you’re looking at the future right in front of you. As a child, playing games on an Atari 2600 games console on the family tv instead of a board game. As a teenager, it was the first time I listened to a CD, hearing crisp and clear digital music in an otherwise analogue era. Travelling in Phoenix last year, I had another of those moments when I took my first ride in a Waymo self driving car. How was the experience? A little nerve wracking to start, a little odd, then very quickly it became utterly normal. The ride was calm and controlled and best of all I got to pick my own music to play and set the optimum cabin temperature. There were a couple of quirks, but overall the ride was great. Is this the future of transport? It will absolutely be a part of it. The technology has advanced enough to work reliably in a real world setting. Rolling it out will undoubtedly take time, but it’s definitely coming. Just like that first console and first cd, it’s a ride that I’ll always remember taking.
