CTED conducts follow-up visit to Turkey

From 10 – 14 June the Counter-Terrorism Committee/Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate conducted a visit to the Republic of Turkey in follow-up to the Committee’s initial visit in May 2007. The follow-up visit focused on progress made by Turkey in implementing the CTC’s 2007 visit recommendations, as well as on measures introduced to implement Security Council resolutions 2178 (2014) and 2396 (2017) and other relevant Council resolutions. In accordance with the practice followed for the Committee’s previous visits, the human rights aspects of Turkey’s counter-terrorism measures and the roles of women in countering terrorism and violent extremism were also raised during the discussions, in accordance with Security Council resolution 2242 (2015).

The delegation was led by Assistant Secretary-General Michèle Coninsx, Executive Director of CTED, and also included CTED experts and experts from UN Women, the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the International Organisation of Migration, and the World Customs Organisation. During the visit, the CTED Executive Director met with representatives of a number of ministries and departments engaged in counter-terrorism, as well as representatives of academia. The delegation also held a series of technical-level meetings with multiple ministries and departments and conducted an on-site visit to Istanbul International Airport.
